The Danish Caricatures
Bitched on: Friday, February 03, 2006 Time: 2/03/2006 11:15:00 PM
Anyway, I was scanning through the net trying to look for the controversional and incriminating pictures depicting the Prophet Mohammed (SAW; peace be upon him) and boy... did I find them.
PS. I am NOT trying to ride in the wave of this controversy to popularise my blog but instead, I was genuinely (and naturally) curious to see the pictures for myself. So if you share the same sentiments, I recommend this site I came across to see the images. However, I do have to warn that these pictures, paintings and cartoon drawings are EXTREMELY offensive and hurtful. (So to all my Muslims friends I advise you to view the pictures with a ... erm... open mind? I couldn't do it myself! What blasphemy!)
Well, I do have to warn you before you go berserk and bomb the embassies... Rite...
My first reaction was shock. How could they print all these insulting caricatures in the newspapers? Has the European media gone insensitive and (especially) INSANE??
Aiyoh...
Oh... to all those who are ignorant (like some of my friends) of what's happening in the world around you and what is making news lately (no... not celeb gossip), here is what that has happened so far...
"The drawings, which seemed to portray the prophet as a terrorist, were published in September, but the row erupted this month after diplomatic efforts to solve the issue failed. One drawing shows Prophet Muhammad (SAW) wearing a turban shaped as a bomb." -Al Jazeera
"Newspapers in France and Germany reprinted Danish caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) yesterday, saying press freedom was more important than a wave of protest across the Muslim world. saying they wanted to support the right of Danish and Norwegian papers to publish the caricatures."
-Washington Post Foreign Service
"A Danish newspaper is apologizing to the world's Muslims for publishing caricatures of (the Prophet) Muhammad (SAW) that sparked a furor in the Islamic world."
"A statement posted on the newspaper's Web site says the drawings "were not in violation of Danish law, but have undoubtedly offended many Muslims, which we would like to apologize for."" -The Associated Press
"Islam forbids visual depictions of the prophet, and regards violations by Muslims as highly sinful and by non-Muslims as the ultimate sort of insult. The prohibition is in part an application of the Quran's strict opposition to idolatry, the worship of a physical object as a god, including any hint of such devotion toward the faith's revered human prophet. In the Quran, "shirk" (Arabic for "partnering" or "associating" anything with God) is the one unforgivable sin: "God does not forgive the joining of partners with him: anything less than that he forgives to whoever he will, but anyone who joins partners with God is lying and committing a tremendous sin" (4:48)." -RICHARD N. OSTLING, AP Religion Writer
So now, what do you get? Hundreds of thousands Muslims protesting around the world (look at what you have done) and the rioters burning the countries' flags (aiyoh..no originality). I mean, the countries involved Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, Iceland, Belgium, the USA (always kaypoh), the UK (televised only but still...) and even Jordan (an Islamic country), should have been more SENSITIVE.
The reason I gathered as to why this pictures where created in the first place... "The Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten created the furor over depictions of Mohammed by publishing a series of 12 drawings after a local author said he was unable to find any artist willing to depict Mohammed for his upcoming illustrated book." "The entire controversy started when Danish author Kåre Bluitgen complained that he could not find an artist brave enought to illustrate his upcoming book about Mohammed. The newspaper Jyllands-Posten issued a call for submissions from any artists willing to take up the challenge." Another surprise awaited me as I Googled for the pictures, I chanced upon a website that had more images of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW), even those from the Western and Islamic civilisations as far back as the Middle Ages and from countries as diversed as 19th century France, ancient Persia, Indianised Indonesia and even Buddhist Mongolia. There are also recent images from the above controversional Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, a disturbing drawing by an Israeli woman, a tongue-in-cheek comic strip (Jesus and Mo) and even America's South Park.
"While the debate rages, an important point has been overlooked: despite the Islamic prohibition against depicting Mohammed under any circumstances, hundreds of paintings, drawings and other images of Mohammed have been created over the centuries, with nary a word of complaint from the Muslim world. The recent cartoons in Jyllands-Posten are nothing new; it's just that no other images of (the Prophet) Mohammed (SAW) have ever been so widely publicized." Warning: See it if you wanna see it. Strongly recommended for the strongly curious and non-suicidal or radical Muslim friends (kidding lah..). This website contains more insensitive and offensive pictures. (And please don't slam me and say that I enjoy our prophet to be humiliated, cause I really don't. Besides you are viewing this pictures with your own free will). I welcome your comments in my tagboard...Labels: religion
