Is this supposed to be funny?
Bitched on: Friday, February 16, 2007 Time: 2/16/2007 12:43:00 AM
Am I missing something or is this voice recording supposed to be funny?
My friends were pissing their pants off laughing (not literally, otherwise the studio would have stunk) but really, is it funny? Or just plain wrong?
The pranksters (assholes, I think; original, but assholes nevertheless) have clearly crossed the line; pissing off the waiter of some Indian Muslim restaurant.
I admit, I laughed a bit... a lot actually...and I'm ashamed... But I still don't understand what's so extremely funny about it?
Is it the guy's thick accent? Is it the persistent 'pork' joke? Or is it because of how the guy blew his top off?
Despite whatever reason, I just think its very racist, insensitive and extremely immature. What pleasures did they (the pranksters, and the people watching) get from this? These imbeciles recorded it, uploaded it onto Youtube; surely they want to be heard, and popularised.
Does this count as racism? Or harassment?
So I'm still wondering if this intolerable act is supposed to be funny. We're in Singapore, for God's sake...
In China, for example, the media (newspapers, tv, wadeva) is not showing any images of pigs (despite the coming lunar new year; 'year of the pig') so as not to offend the Muslim minority of the country. But we're not doing that in Singapore, are we?
In fact, we are laughing at that fact; making that sensitive issue a joke. Stop taking our religious harmony for granted, I say.
PS: Wishing Happy 'Pork' New Year to all my Chinese friends.

I'm still not used to my hair colour!!! I was especially self-conscious of how brownish my hair was last Friday when I went to the mosque for my prayers. However, I was more appalled to see so many other youths with brighter blonder hair.
But better that they had come down to pray in the first place than play soccer at some street soccer court, right?
At the gates of the mosque after the prayers had ended, there was a couple of teenage guys giving out pamphlets to other youths. It was for this workshop thingy held by the mosque during the December holidays. It was aimed at those aged 15 to 19.
I was... ehem... flattered to get one (despite being well over the teenage years...). Its nice to know that the mosque (and MUIS, the Islamic organisation in Singapore) is trying to reach out to the younger generation now (a far cry from my time). I remember hearing 'sermons' (what's the Islamic equivalent, can someone help me out?) every single Friday; about damnation to sinners in hell for all eternity, and other unimaginable stuff capable of nightmares...
It was like "this is bad, that was bad, this is not good, that is not so good, don't do this, don't do that or else..."
Don't get me wrong, I have never questioned the religion and its teachings. I was just questioning its approach. In addition to that, I was trying to figure out its relevance to the present.
Are Muslims still transfixed with the literal translation of the Qur'an? Come on let's face it, the holy book was created centuries ago... We should use it as a guide in our lives, that I believe, but not to the extent of cutting off the hands of thieves and stoning of an adulterous couple to death (punishments still past out in some Muslim countries to date!).
But I'm not going to dwell on that right now (maybe some other day...).
Speaking of relevance of Islamic laws to the present, my taggy has been flooded with a 'debate' between two of the most bimbotic people I know (other than myself and I mean it in a good way) about ear-piercing and going to hell and stuff.
So to help these poor souls who are 'damned to hell' (like they said it themselves) be enlightened, I actually went online to google on what's disallowed and allowed in the holy Qur'an and more importantly, things which are relevant to today's context.
So about ear piercing and other body piercings for that matter; Allah warns us against the temptings of the shayton (devil) and one of those warning is about piercing and changing the creation of Allah. So no to body piercings for both man and woman (just ear piercings for the ladies are allowed), instead (the website says) donate the money 'intended to poke holes in your body' to charity.
Note: Another site has this to say; Body piercing for males is not at all permissible in Islam. Ear piercing has been permitted for females, according to some scholars. Such an exception, however, does not apply to males.
Still on the topic of changing one's appearance, surgery for the sake of beautification is disallowed while surgery to correct birth deformity or post-accident scarring is permissible. Even shaping the eyebrows is not allowed... ehem...
Then there are other seemingly 'small' and 'harmless' things which are also not permissible in Islam like sleeping on the stomach and contact between unrelated (and unwed) man-and-woman. Even working at a bank with dealings based on nothing but interest (because taking and giving interest is a major sin in Islam in the first place!) is haraam (not allowed).
Then there are things that are not encouraged like eating at a restaurant which sells alcohol (does a kopitiam count?) and even celebrating birthdays. I admit, I am guilty of doing all of these things (yikes!!!).
Blogger's Note: For more Islamic FAQs, see here. I am not implying I am some 'saint' or 'holy man'. Its just me doing some 'research' on my religion.
Recently, I received some flak over my decision to post Britney Spears' panties-less pictures. A certain someone called me a disgrace because I'm a Muslim (at least that's what I think he was trying to say, his 'Engrish' wasn't as impeccable.)
Whatever lah. Can't be bothered to argue with these self-proclaimed righteous and 'sin-free' people. Like they say,
"Never argue with an idiot. People watching might not know the difference."

I've been so busy the past month, I barely realised its going to be Hari Raya all over again.
Not sure why, but I'm really not in the festive mood this year. Probably because of all the coming deadlines looming over me. Shit man... So many projects, essays and other stuff all due almost the same time.
Man... No wonder, I was so into the workload that the Ramadhan month went passed so quickly...
Speaking of Ramadhan, its probably the seventh year that I have fasted the entire month without a break.
Thank you. Thank you.
Would have been the 8th year if not for my 'A' levels in 2003. Couldn't tahan (take it)... lol.
Anyway, that should be expected of someone my age (not too young and not too old and sickly). And also because I'm male and I have no excuse to not fast (womenfolk who are ehem... having that time of the month can't fast). I almost past out of dehydration while at my field camp during my stint in the Army. But I pulled through amazingly. Can't say the same for some of my friends though.
Speaking of which, guys who are openly (and shamelessly) not fasting during the month really sicken me...
Like this young Malay couple I had the misfortune to share the bus with while I was on my way to school. It was really sickening cause they were eating KFC fried chicken and other side dishes on the bus! I know they would obviously be 'embarassed' to be seen not fasting and eating in the KFC restaurant. But on the bus?! Come on. Have some decency and consideration. Not only are you blatantly not considerate to the bus driver who has to clean up after you, you are also openly eating in front of other people who might be fasting (like myself). And that was so... unbelievably inconsiderate. I would understand if you were not Malay, but being one... and not fasting... that just irks me! If you aren't fasting in the first place due to whatever reasons (menstruating or what, I dunno how this applies to that guy), have the decency to eat at home or somewhere private...
At first I thought it was just the girl eating but then I caught a glimpse of the guy also munching on a burger. Sickening. Shameful. Disgusting.
They were so happily eating an entire KFC feast and were 'oblivious' that there were other Malay-Muslims around them, bothered and irritated like myself.
Shame on them...
And that couple wasn't the only isolated case. I had another encounter with another young Malay couple on another bus. This time they were so touchy and lovey-dovey that I felt like puking. Seriously.
They were making out and trading saliva with each other... And boy, were they loud. In case you are thinking that I was some perv who kept staring at them, let me tell you that I was seated first and they happened to have chosen a seat in front of me.
It was really an eyesore.
For the benefit of non-Muslims, according to Islamic law, an unwed couple shouldn't be behaving intimately like this. Heck, in fact, contact between a man and woman (without blood relations) is strictly forbidden. Furthermore, its the month of Ramadhan, supposedly the holiest month.
And that was what the guy behind me actually told the misbehaving couple when he confronted and berated the couple. The couple was actually too shocked for words and I couldn't stop smiling. Haha...
Serve them right.
Actually, I shouldn't be bitching about them... I'm supposed to be doing good deeds and forget bad habits. And its also the season to seek forgiveness and spread compassion... Oops... My bad.
(Contrary to popular belief, Hari Raya Aidilfitri itself doesn't mark the new year, its just mark the passing of the month from Ramadhan to the month of Syawal)
So since this is the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, I would like to take this chance to seek forgiveness from all my friends and family members for all my wrongdoings (I've just saved money on buying Hari Raya cards... lol... oops)...
So to all my friends,
Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Maaf Zahir dan Batin.
To all Muslims around the world, Eid Mubarak Greetings and may peace be upon you.
And before I forget, to my all Hindu friends and readers, Have a Happy Deepavali.

I saw this piece of news online. (Yes... I surf the net to read up on news too. Surprise, surprise...)
"Muslims angry over pope's remarks" Which makes me wonder... I'm a Muslim. So should I be angry? Are ALL muslims angry now? And this coming from a respectable online News website.
Anyway, what was it that supposedly 'angered us'? What did the pope even say?
Pope Benedict XVI had quoted from a book recounting a conversation between 14th century Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and a Persian scholar on the truths of Christianity and Islam.
The pope said, "The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war. He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Mohammed (SAW) brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.'"
He was just quoting what a dead emperor said centuries ago!
Yet, the media in Islamic countries and thousands of Muslims worldwide must have 'ignored' that fact and heard, "Mohammed (SAW)... blah...blah...evil and inhuman... blah..."
And what I think the Islamic extremists heard was, "Jihad... blah... blah... Jihad... blah... Jihad... blah..." So what do I think? Lighten up, lah... Its not like he said he agreed with the quote (neither did he repudiate it... hmmm... Now that's wrong.)
But why the ultra-sensitivity? First the Danish caricature controversy, and now this. Its things like these that makes us look like cry-babies with violent tantrums. Goodness...
That said, it does not mean that I would just stand and watch if our names have been tarnished. And I am not saying that we should not care or respond. But why fight fire with fire?
And that said, I am not implying that I won't fight for Islam if ever I feel our existence is threatened. I would die for my religion. I would die for what I believe in. Wah... heavy stuff... And that is true for anyone with any faith. Christian. Jew. Hindu. Buddhist. Recently, I saw this vandalised onto the toilet wall;
It says; "ISLAM TERRORIST." Along with other hurtful and insensitive statements.
Like "F*ck Islam", "F*ck all Muslims" and lastly "F*ck 'ALLAH'".
The last one was damn hurtful. Not only because of the obvious, he (it was a male toilet, so... duh) had actually put inverted commas, implying that the Almighty is not real or true.
The first thing that went through my mind was anger and outrage. This is Singapore. Home to sensible and tolerant Singaporeans of many races and religions. Muslims here are generally moderate and have done nothing to have angered or hurt the others (cept maybe that JI-Yishun-bomb-scare-thingy...yikes...).
So why was this son-of-a-bitch saying all this? Did we hurt him or his family? Did we insult him or his faith? Are all muslims terrorists in his eyes? What drove him to write this? But now, come to think of it, I pity him. This person must really have a small mind like that of a child's; blinded by the negative images he sees of Islam in the media. He is without a doubt, ignorant about the truth and beauty of the religion. He is also a coward, expressing himself on a stinking toilet wall, of all places.
Plus, he is SOgoing to hell.
So, let people say what they want. Let them do what they want. Let God punish them if thay are wrong. Not us. That is why its called the Judgement Day.

Anyway, I was scanning through the net trying to look for the controversional and incriminating pictures depicting the Prophet Mohammed (SAW; peace be upon him) and boy... did I find them.
PS. I am NOT trying to ride in the wave of this controversy to popularise my blog but instead, I was genuinely (and naturally) curious to see the pictures for myself. So if you share the same sentiments, I recommend this site I came across to see the images. However, I do have to warn that these pictures, paintings and cartoon drawings are EXTREMELY offensive and hurtful. (So to all my Muslims friends I advise you to view the pictures with a ... erm... open mind? I couldn't do it myself! What blasphemy!)
Well, I do have to warn you before you go berserk and bomb the embassies... Rite...
My first reaction was shock. How could they print all these insulting caricatures in the newspapers? Has the European media gone insensitive and (especially) INSANE??
Aiyoh...
Oh... to all those who are ignorant (like some of my friends) of what's happening in the world around you and what is making news lately (no... not celeb gossip), here is what that has happened so far...
"The drawings, which seemed to portray the prophet as a terrorist, were published in September, but the row erupted this month after diplomatic efforts to solve the issue failed. One drawing shows Prophet Muhammad (SAW) wearing a turban shaped as a bomb."
"Newspapers in France and Germany reprinted Danish caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) yesterday, saying press freedom was more important than a wave of protest across the Muslim world. saying they wanted to support the right of Danish and Norwegian papers to publish the caricatures."
"A Danish newspaper is apologizing to the world's Muslims for publishing caricatures of (the Prophet) Muhammad (SAW) that sparked a furor in the Islamic world."
"A statement posted on the newspaper's Web site says the drawings "were not in violation of Danish law, but have undoubtedly offended many Muslims, which we would like to apologize for.""
"Islam forbids visual depictions of the prophet, and regards violations by Muslims as highly sinful and by non-Muslims as the ultimate sort of insult.
The prohibition is in part an application of the Quran's strict opposition to idolatry, the worship of a physical object as a god, including any hint of such devotion toward the faith's revered human prophet. In the Quran, "shirk" (Arabic for "partnering" or "associating" anything with God) is the one unforgivable sin: "God does not forgive the joining of partners with him: anything less than that he forgives to whoever he will, but anyone who joins partners with God is lying and committing a tremendous sin" (4:48)."
So now, what do you get? Hundreds of thousands Muslims protesting around the world (look at what you have done) and the rioters burning the countries' flags (aiyoh..no originality). I mean, the countries involved Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, Iceland, Belgium, the USA (always kaypoh), the UK (televised only but still...) and even Jordan (an Islamic country), should have been more SENSITIVE.
The reason I gathered as to why this pictures where created in the first place...
"The Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten created the furor over depictions of Mohammed by publishing a series of 12 drawings after a local author said he was unable to find any artist willing to depict Mohammed for his upcoming illustrated book."
"The entire controversy started when Danish author Kåre Bluitgen complained that he could not find an artist brave enought to illustrate his upcoming book about Mohammed. The newspaper Jyllands-Posten issued a call for submissions from any artists willing to take up the challenge."
Another surprise awaited me as I Googled for the pictures, I chanced upon a website that had more images of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW), even those from the Western and Islamic civilisations as far back as the Middle Ages and from countries as diversed as 19th century France, ancient Persia, Indianised Indonesia and even Buddhist Mongolia. There are also recent images from the above controversional Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, a disturbing drawing by an Israeli woman, a tongue-in-cheek comic strip (Jesus and Mo) and even America's South Park.
"While the debate rages, an important point has been overlooked: despite the Islamic prohibition against depicting Mohammed under any circumstances, hundreds of paintings, drawings and other images of Mohammed have been created over the centuries, with nary a word of complaint from the Muslim world. The recent cartoons in Jyllands-Posten are nothing new; it's just that no other images of (the Prophet) Mohammed (SAW) have ever been so widely publicized."
Warning: See it if you wanna see it. Strongly recommended for the strongly curious and non-suicidal or radical Muslim friends (kidding lah..). This website contains more insensitive and offensive pictures. (And please don't slam me and say that I enjoy our prophet to be humiliated, cause I really don't. Besides you are viewing this pictures with your own free will). I welcome your comments in my tagboard...

Aiyoh...
Oh... to all those who are ignorant (like some of my friends) of what's happening in the world around you and what is making news lately (no... not celeb gossip), here is what that has happened so far...
