Warning to all 'Bus Uncles' out there.
Bitched on: Monday, April 30, 2007
    Time: 4/30/2007 12:44:00 AM

Still on the topic of violent Singaporean youths, I stumbled onto this video while searching Youtube.com for more 'singapore-youths-fights'.

Remember the 'Bus Uncle' from Hong Kong? The one who cussed and swore at another passenger on the bus he was upset with? And you were secretly hoping that the abused guy would stop being such a wimp and get up to kick the moron where the sun don't shine...

What if that did happen? Is it justifiable?
Well, maybe this 'uncle' deserves it too?

Blogger's Note: Video contains mild violence (duh) and vulgarities (double duh). Viewer's discretion is advised.

I don't condone violence. Neither do I condone any form of rudeness (in this case, aggression) against someone *much much* older (and more retarded).

Read the NewPaper for the first time in weeks today. Its really trashy-over-sensationalized-tabloid crap. But a good read nonetheless. Haha...

The headlines caught my eyes: Singaporean youths and 'happy slappings' caught on video cam and then posted on Youtube.com (or something like that). What the fuc*ing hell?

So I'm going to dedicate the next few blog entries to the future and pride of Singapore, our retarded youths.

Here's one of the videos which they mentioned in the report. It was hard to find and the original was removed (I think), so here:

    200th Entry
Bitched on: Tuesday, April 24, 2007
    Time: 4/24/2007 11:58:00 PM

This will be my official 200th entry. (Plus I will also be inviting my 15000th blog reader). Not bad for just over a year of blogging. So again, thanks.

I just wanted to blog about what I'm going to be doing during the coming holidays (officially starts on the 3rd for me).

I just had my second last paper a few hours ago. And my final paper will be next week (the 3rd of May); whilst most of my friends will be finishing their exams tomorrow (and those in NTU should be working part-time by now lah)... Dang...

Fortunately, I've already secured a job with my lecturer. Decent pay and a lot of benefits... Lol.

So my holiday break is going to be packed.

Part-time researching work in May. And then the trips to Saudi Arabia and Dubai in June. And then Freshmen Orientation Camp in July. And finally back to school again in August.

    So exciting.

So here's a clip from "Russel Peters 'live' in NYC" to celebrate.

Enjoy. See parts 2 to 7 here.

    Miss Singapore Universe.

    Yucks.

    So not worth watching.

    Update:

Jessica Tan won. No surprises there.

But I think the real winner should have been Christabel Campbell. In the question and answer round when asked which sport will Singapore win its first Olympic gold medal in, she answered,

"It depends if we're looking at local or foreign talent. We will win in whichever sport the Sports Association decides to import foreign talent for. Just look at table tennis.

But for local, I'd say sailing because at the Doha games, we did get (quite a few) gold medals, so that's our best bet."

    Ditto.
    Give the girl a tiger.

Now, a girl who speaks her mind. That's hot.

Sigh... Why are my favourites always getting third place?

    Earth Day
    Time: 4/22/2007 03:54:00 AM

    Happy Earth Day everyone.

Enjoy it while you can, cause according to Al Gore, this earth is going ka-put soon. Very soon.

The signs are already pointing towards a-sooner-than-expected-catastrophic-end-of-the-world.

Look at the freaky weather in Singapore. Scorching hot mornings and monsoon-equivalent rainstorms towards the evenings.

Not only here, the weather patterns all around the world are going haywire.
Geographical and meterological aspects aside, look at the world around you.

Violence. Shootings. Wars. Famine. Droughts. Floods. Britney's bald head.

All signs pointing to the end of the world.

    Hmmm...

Isn't it coincidental that Phua Chu Kang has wraped up the last season? This in turn marks the end of good quality local shows?
Hmmm... Coincidence? I don't think so.

God save us all. Oh... and Happy soon-to-be-destroyed-Earth Day.

    Melted...
    Time: 4/22/2007 12:43:00 AM

Ever since the 'Mouth Cancer' lady appeared on TV:
its hard to believe what's real on commercials nowadays (she turned out to be a model with prosthetics). Of course, I'm not denying that smoking does cause cancer: mouth, lung, throat etc.
But you know that commercial for the new promotion from a certain fast food joint? The one with nachos and cheese and big chunky chicken wrapped in a burrito pocket?
Looks so good... Makes you drool even.
So I simply had to have it.

This is what I got instead when I had it delivered.

A small soggy prata with really small portions of chicken and soggy nacho chips.

    How disappointing...

    Excerpts from the 'manifesto':

You had a hundred billion chances and ways to have avoided today but you decided to spill my blood. You forced me into a corner and gave me only one option. The decision was yours. Now you have blood on your hands that will never wash off.

You have vandalized my heart, raped my soul and torched my conscience. You thought it was one pathetic boy’s life you were extinguishing. Thanks to you, I die like Jesus Christ, to inspire generations of the weak and the defenseless people.

Do you know what it feels to be spit on your face and to have trash shoved down your throat? Do you know what it feels like to dig your own grave? Do you know what it feels like to have throat slashed from ear to ear? Do you know what it feels like to be torched alive? Do you know what it feels like to be humiliated and be impaled upon on a cross? And left to bleed to death for your amusement? You have never felt a single ounce of pain your whole life. Did you want to inject as much misery in our lives as you can just because you can?

You had everything you wanted. Your Mercedes wasn’t enough, you brats. Your golden necklaces weren’t enough, you snobs. Your trust fund wasn’t enough. Your vodka and Cognac weren’t enough. All your debaucheries weren’t enough. Those weren’t enough to fulfill your hedonistic needs. You had everything.

    On one of the videos:

I didn’t have to do this. I could have left. I could have fled. But no, I will no longer run ... It’s not for me. For my children, for my brothers and sisters that you f---, I did it for them.

On a video message minutes before the second shooting:

This is it. This is where it all ends. End of the road. What a life it was. Some life.

    See video here*.

Reasons why Virginia Tech is the worst devastation in U.S. history after 911 and Katrina.
Bitched on: Wednesday, April 18, 2007
    Time: 4/18/2007 12:18:00 PM

Its the deadliest school shooting in American history with 33 dead and 20 injured (to date). The dead includes the shooter himself who has been identified as 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui, a South Korean who had migrated to the States when he was 8. He was a senior in the English department.

He had been described as a 'depressed and deeply disturbed young man' and this was not left unnoticed as his 'grotesque' creative writing projects led a professor to refer him for psychological counseling. "He was very quiet, always by himself," said a neighbour. Few knew who he was. Few knew he existed maybe.
Apparently his body was found with a note containing 'obscenities and denunciations' of 'rich kids' (his parents worked at a dry cleaners).

There wasn't just one shooting, there were two.
What's more controversional is how the university had acted after the first shooting, prior to the second shooting. Many questions had been raised about how they had handled and should have handled it.

The first shooting was reported to have occured at 7.15am at a coed dormitory, Ambler Johnston Hall. The shooting left 2 persons dead. It wasn't until 2 hours later at 9.26am, when emails were sent out to staff and students regarding the gunfire. A second email sent out a few minutes later issued a warning regarding the gunman who was still on the loose.

So why this 2 hours disparity?

Most of the students who came to school were unaware of such emails, reports say, as most had already left their house, on the way to school when the emails were sent out.

And why wasn't school cancelled immediately?

The second shooting, 3 hours after the first shooting, left 30 more dead and 20 injured. Finally, the school issued a warning in a third email that classes were cancelled and students were told to remain indoors.

    Too little too late.

    Who is to be blamed?

The shooter? The bullies whom he detested for making his life difficult? His parents for not seeing this sooner? The school for reacting slowly to the first shooting and not cancelling classes immediately?

Or the flawed American school system - favouring the talented, labelling the losers and turning a blind eye to the bullying?

Or the U.S. government for not banning firearms in the first place?

    Nasi sudah jadi bubur
Bitched on: Saturday, April 14, 2007
    Time: 4/14/2007 02:20:00 AM

That means 'the rice has turned to porridge' in Malay.
What it means exactly is simply 'what is done, is done'.
In other words, irreversible (not to be misread as Irreplaceable... to the left, to the left... ermm... digressed a bit there).

And I find it apt that the saying is in Malay too. Cause recently my dear twinnie received some flaks (again...) when she blogged about the poor parental guidance of Malay parents. And that will eventually result in juvenile delinquents and the cycle goes on. Then we try to 'handle' these delinquents and that would be too late. Bla bla bla...

Its not like its the first time we hear someone addressing that issue. Its undeniable no? Lousy parents bring up rotten children. As simple as that. And it would be hard to change these 'damaged goods'.

Her encounter with a wimpish Malay mother who was afraid to lay a finger on her misbehaving kid made her to make that statement.

But to generalise all Malays as bad parents? Hmmm... Now that's a sensitive and subjective issue. Its the few bad apples that will give the whole bunch a bad name. Plus, I don't see this issue as being unique to just the Malays. Singapore has truckloads of bad parents, across racial boundaries (no comments for other countries though).

But firstly, allow me to ask this question, 'what defines bad parenting?'
Is it the lack of supervision of the kids in public places? Not disciplining their kids in public? Or is it more than that?
Should we define with what's on the surface? With what we see? Or with what we ought to know?

Bad parents abuse their children, that we know. But that doesn't mean all the beating is bad and 'no beating' is good. Come on people, we need to smack them young ones' bottoms once in a while (non-sexually of course... you pervs).

So bad parents can be defined as parents who allow their kids to go astray, without disciplining their kids (doesn't necessary have to be publicly all the time). And these kids misbehave, obviously, with or without the parents presence.

A few weeks back I was aghast at the behaviour of two Malay youths (barely older than primary 1 schoolers). I was on the way to school, on the bus, and the bus was just about to turn around a bend, when out of the corner, these two boys prepared to dash across the road. The bus driver horned as a warning that made the boys stop in their tracks.

But instead of showing gratitude or even remorse, they showed animosity. With their fingers.

Yes, barely a metre tall (fine, I'm exaggerating) but waving their middle fingers high and proud, with a stream of vulgarities to boot. I was very appalled and downright disgusted.

If my son (in the future, I don't have one now; nor do I intend to have one now) were to flash his finger, I would cut it off with a chopper right there and then. And wash the filthy mouth of his with chillies and then a bar of soup.

In all seriousness, I would not hesitate to punish him right there and then: a spank or a slap. I will not have a problem disciplining my kids in public. In the first place, my kids will be so well behaved, they won't need public disciplining (*hmph*).

Spare the rod and spoil the child? No way.

If I need to, I would bring a cane every time we go out.

Just yesterday, I took a bus with the two siblings from hell (a Chinese boy and his younger sister). Oh my God. They were the epitome of rotten kids. Spoilt. Loud. And stubborn. It was a hellish bus ride with them. They sat on the same long rear seat with me.

They were pushing and shoving each other. Giggling loudly, singing loudly and talking loudly. LOUDLY. Even when I had the music in my Ipod turned to the max, they were still LOUD. Freaking loud. Especially the girl. She shouted for her father who was at the front part of the bus. And when I mean 'shout', I really mean 'shout'. Everyone (and I mean 'everyone') turned around to look at the little princess. The father must have been so proud of his little darling.

They kept jumping about on the seat on one end and I on the other end, had to endure the 'tremors' from the terror kids. And the little brats had their legs straightened against the back of the seats in front of them, which they kept kicking and shaking whenever they got overexcited.

The lady seated in front (whom I thought was the mother) kept turning around to scold the little brats. She finally decided to whack the legs of one of the brats in the end to prove her point. But, I realised that she wasn't the mother; when she alighted with me at my stop and left her 'kids' on the bus.

Now, a stranger discplining your kids? That's a bit too much, duncha think?

Another encounter with misbehaving kids also happened to me earlier that day. This time it involved a gang of misfits (no older than primary 3 schoolers). I was in the toilet cubicle doing my 'thang' when the cast of Little Rascals came in.

They began to repeatedly bang the door of the cublicle I was occupying. All the while laughing and threatening to break the door down. Why? Don't ask me. Stupid morons. I was this close to blowing up and (like what chimps would do when threatened, and this is a fact) throw some of my crap over the door.

Now that would have disciplined those rascals. These kids just need to learn their lessons the hard way.

Never mess with a guy on his throne.

    Babeling...
Bitched on: Sunday, April 08, 2007
    Time: 4/08/2007 11:37:00 AM

    Yesterday's rain was so horrible!

The thunder yesterday was non-stop and loud!!! The wind was howling like mad too. And I kinda forgot to close the kitchen windows until it was almost too late. Half the kitchen was wet.

And flashes of lightning struck uber close to my house. So close, it caused a black-out.

I was momentarily stunned in the pitch-black house. My first instinct was to run out of the house screaming. But then I decided to do something more sensible and look for the torchlight. When I couldn't find the torch after a couple of minutes, I reconsidered running out of the house screaming again.

But then again, I remembered about the main switch that you have to turn on whenever there's a blackout. So I felt my way around to find the switch to turn it on.

    Haha... I'm such a wimp.

Anyway, my parents got into an accident yesterday in JB. Nothing bad, thank God. But the car's front bottom part was smashed in. Some pail fell from the back of some stupid trailer and my dad's car behind that stupid trailer drove over the pail. It sounded like some small stupid accident but it was enough to smash in the front of the car.

The Malaysian trailer was speeding by the way. Jackass.
People like this should be ban from driving forever. Stupid jackass.

Well, it was an expansive grocery trip to Malaysia in the end (to get the car fixed).

Anyway, I rented 'Babel', starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. I heard it was supposed to be good but, man, was I disappointed. Disappointed.

The movie seemingly solidified the stereotypes of the different nationalities. Moroccan officials are corrupt. Americans are jackasses who think that the whole world are against them. Mexicans are treated badly by the Americans, plus they live in smelly dusty slums. And Japanese schoolgirls are horny, very horny.

And Babel has nude scenes. A lot. And some Sharon Stone's Basic Instinct moments too. Well, its surprising cause I rented the DVD from VideoEzy. Yes, VideoEzy. Shouldn't all this be censored? I'm not complaining, I'm just concerned that this kind of DVDs might get into the wrong hands, children's. It has full frontal for God's sake. Well, the only warning was this really small sticker showing Mature 18. Anyway, the movie sucked, a lot of babeling.

Bloggers Note: Happy Easter to all my Christian friends and readers. I got this new episode of South Park for all to enjoy.

What is architecture? Singapore's future look.
Bitched on: Saturday, April 07, 2007
    Time: 4/07/2007 03:39:00 PM

See previous entries: What is architecture?
    建築はである何?

I feel like I'm writing an essay. lol... But a good essay isn't complete without a conclusion or an insight into things to come.

So still on the topic of IR (Integrated Resort) from the last entry, the one in Marina Bay would look something like this:

It is designed by another internationally-renowned Israeli architect Moshe Safdie. Click on the image above to see the reasons why it won (which came as a surprise to many, myself included).

Besides the IR, another much-anticipated addition to the Marina Bay area would be the Marina Barrage (below). Technically we can't call the Singapore River a river anymore and that sucks (all the history and wildlife would be gone just like that).

And the London Eye copycat and almost-world's-largest-ferris-world-until-China-announced-her-plans-to-build-a-larger-one-just-a-few-days-later, Singapore Flyer.

    Two words: No originality.

    And the new National Stadium would look something like this;

"With an estimated cost of $600 million, Singapore Gold’s horseshoe shaped National Stadium, designed by HOK Sport Architecture, will boast the world’s first waterfront stadium with a retractable roof. The horse shoe design provides a view of the Kallang Basin and the city, while allowing the natural breeze to cool the stadium."

Nice... Kinda makes you forget why you were so upset about them demolishing the old Kallang National stadium there for a minute.

And finally, good news to all OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) and Rem Koolhaas fans (the what and the who now?), they have finally decided to build something on our shores (despite having slammed Singapore earlier in the book S,M,L,XL; Singapore songlines - thirty years of tabula rasa ).

    Now that's very sexy...

On a final note, to all my fellow architecture lovers, here's a cool website I find really awesome. Do check it out.

    What is Architecture? The IR?
    Time: 4/07/2007 04:39:00 AM

    Continued from 'What is architecture?'

Of course not every star-chitect's design is choosen to be realised in Singapore.

The famous (or rather infamous) example has to be Frank Gehry's unprecedented scale of glass and sails for Atlantis Sentosa (Kerzner’s Sentosa Integrated Resort/ Casino bid, see pictures above and below) which was passed over for the tamer and 'seen-that-before' Infinity@The Bay Pte Ltd (a joint venture between Genting International & Star Cruises).

That was a day when almost everyone in the architectural world mourned the lost of a unique and monumental would-be icon. Personally, I am not a fan of Gehry's works but I am a fan of making Singapore a global architectural icon and attraction. And Gehry's unique jellyfish-like structures (but I would describe it as crushed pieces of paper; its crappy but still monumental) would have definitely put Singapore on the world map (kinda like what Gehry's Guggenheim museum did for the sleepy fishing town of Bilbao, picture below) . It reaped in millions alone annually from architectural tourism.

Unique, bold and experimental. Singapore can't seem to handle it just yet, which is a huge pity if Singapore wants to expand beyond the Bali-island-resort architecture. So instead of something futuristic and timeless, we have this:

Have I seen that before? Oh yeah, in Genting Highlands. So much kitsch, it turns my stomach. So what if it has Universal Studios? Would a tourist from Australia or United States be wondering, "Gee, I'm sick of the Universal Studios here in (insert name of country here), maybe I'll go halfway across the globe to Singapore's,"?

Maybe the Singaporean government should have thought long term.

Gehry's design = more tourism = more revenue = future themeparks (Universal Studios or Disneyland even).

    What is Architecture?
    Time: 4/07/2007 04:19:00 AM

I guess the reason why I'm feeling inspired to blog about architecture is because I saw the ad for Reflections on Keppel Bay. They are selling the condo along with Daniel Libeskind's name (very obviously). He's another super famous architect (best known for his Jewish museum in Berlin).

I also came across this article about branded condos (condos designed by internationally-renowned star-chitects). Which is a good trend, I think. This shows Singaporeans are more refined and cultured now to be able to appreciate good architecture and even their architects. So move over Prada and Ferarri, I want me a Libeskind or a Zaha Hadid.
(In case you're wondering, the 'Erwin Viray' they keep quoting from in the article is my Dr Erwin Viray, my studio tutor.)

The architecture is just so Libeskind's style. Very sexy might I add.

Speaking of sexy condos, I simply cannot wait for The Sail @ Marina Bay. Simply sexy and curvaceous. Halfway through the construction and it already looks promising.

    建築はである何? Part 2
    Time: 4/07/2007 02:50:00 AM

    Read Part 1.

Still on the topic of well-known Japanese architects, Kenzo Tange is another awesome star-chitect who has left many marks in Singapore's humble shore. He designed the OUB and UOB towers (that's practically half of Singapore skyline!).

If you think the picture looks highly suspicious, then you, my friend, have a very sharp eyesight. Its not a picture of the famous UOB towers. Its of Tange's Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office. No one can blame you if you didn't see that one coming.

These two pairs of buildings are almost identical! Gasp!
    Talk about recycled designs.

Another Asian architect who has made it huge (mega huge) in the architectural industry is I.M. Pei, he designed the controversional glass pyramids of the Lourve museum in Paris for one.

He is also the first star-chitect to have graced our shores in 1975 (thanks to him, many offers from other architects came pouring in) with OCBC tower (bottom, left) as the first of his many contributions.

He designed Raffles City (right) as well. Rumours had it that he had a huge disagreement with the local firm and left in the middle of the construction (which might explain why the building is circular on one side and angular on the other...kidding).

He also designed Kallang Indoor theatre and The Gateway (below) as well.

Which, to me, is the finest piece of architecture in Singapore. Simple, geometric and even playful (looks 2-dimensional at certain angles). I can't say the same for its neighbour Parkview Square a.k.a Gotham City building (the pseudo art deco-esque building).

Many people will tend to favour it (cause its ornate, looks different and interesting) but not me. I think its crap. But nice to know Singapore has a lot of interesting architecture around. Crappy or not.

    建築はである何? Part 1
Bitched on: Friday, April 06, 2007
    Time: 4/06/2007 11:39:00 PM

    Kechiku to wa?
That means 'what is architecture?' in Japanese.
I realised that I haven't blogged much about architecture. As much as I should. Being an architecture student and all.
Well, I know I won't be like those well-known archi bloggers but here goes.

    Lets start with something local.
Ahh... Vivocity. Its designed by a well-renowned and respected Japanese architect, Toyo Ito. So much hype about the architecture (locally). But in the architectural world (I don't mean to sound elitist) its a Disaster with a capitol D.
Here's what it looks like inside.

Is it me or is the ceiling on the second floor a wee bit (claustrophobicly) low?

Next time you go there, notice the grotesque 'toilet-pipes' holding the green structures up to the ceiling.
Vivocity is just like any other boring shopping mall but wrapped in concrete (looks unfinished) fluid (supposedly) skin. Well, I hate it. The skin is just a huge piece of ornamentation; completely unnecessary and looks like its just pasted on. Just look at the exposed steel structures holding the skin! An eyesore really. Which, in moi's humble opinion, every good architect in his right mind shouldn't be doing.

I don't mean to say Toyo Ito was out of his mind, oh no no no... in the first place I doubt it was his one hundred percent intention and design. Heard rumours that Toyo Ito and Co. had to clean up the mess of some bankrupt American architectural and construction firm at the last minute.

If that wasn't true, then I would highly suspect that the local companies were stingy; wanting to save money and compromise the design with cheaper alternatives for the form and material.

Proof of that? Well, Toyo Ito won a design competition for an opera theatre in Taichung, Taiwan. His entry (from the model below) looks a lil bit like Vivocity (hardly surprising cause architects tend to stick to their tried and tested designs, a.k.a recycled designs). If the real deal would look exactly like the model, then I believe that that would have been Ito's original intention for Vivocity too. This is probably what Vivocity should have really looked like.

Another entry for the Taichung Opera House design competition include another well-known star-chitect, Iraqi-British Zaha Hadid; she's the first woman to win a Pritzker Prize, equivalent to a Nobel Prize in the architectural world (there I go again).

Looks a bit phallic duncha think?

    See Part 2.

    17 hours of sleep.
    Time: 4/06/2007 11:57:00 AM

Have you ever slept for more than 12 hours?

And when you wake-up, you feel not at all refreshed but still sleepy? You feel and look like crap (that's for sure).

Your breath stinks, enough to murder anyone within a 2 metre diameter.
Your eyes are puffy and covered shut with shitloads of eye crust.
Your body aches to the bone; any movement might break your brittle bones.
Your every step feels like your brain is at the sole of your feet; extremely throbbing headache.
And the time you take to finish off a pee deserves to be in the Guiness World of Records book.

    Muahaha...

    Submission is over.

Haven't slept for 2 nights in a row. Really.

We have been working in my studio, doing our panels and models. For many many days in a row. And when submission day was looming closer, almost everyone I know stopped sleeping.

Thank God its over. I need my bed.
