Triple lucky...
Bitched on: Monday, December 31, 2007 Time: 12/31/2007 05:44:00 PM
For last year's 2006/2007 entry I had gathered famous quotes of 2006. In addition to that entry, I revisited some of the highlights of the year in another entry. Not forgetting the all-important new year's resolution list. So with this entry, I hope to kill three birds with one stone. I call this list "The People of 2007".
Personally for me, on top of the list is, without a doubt, my dear Daddy. His near-death experience had made me realise how my life would easily crumble without him. He, like my Mum, is the air that I breath. I simply cannot live without them. I cried buckets realising that I could have lost him. So never ever take anyone you love for granted, cos' losing them means losing a big piece of your life too. That is absolutely on the top of my 2008 resolution list.
So now, lets start the chart proper. The People of 2007.
Like all kinds of charts, I have a few entries which almost made it into the list but didn't. Those bubbling under the chart include:
George W. Bush Junior. For being an inspiration to all the low IQ people out there that one day they can become the president of a powerful country too.
Anna Nicole Smith. For living a life so full of drama that if Hollywood was to do a film adaptation of her life, it would be categorized under 'fantasy'. (more)
Team Singapore. They have performed exceptionally well in this year's Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand. Bagging 43 gold medals and 127 medals in total, the athletes have definitely outdone themselves, surpassing initial targets. Job well done. (more)
So here are those who made it into the list:
10. Otto Fong (blog). He is the brave homosexual teacher (pictured below, source: his blog) who publicly came out in his blog knowing full well the repercussions and the reactions he would get from the school, the media and the rest of the public. "When you ask me who I am, I will answer: I am a son, a brother, a long-time companion, an uncle, a teacher, a part of your community, a Singaporean. And I am also gay. I will not let the closet bind my feet, because I am made to sprint." (more) 9. NMP Siew Kum Hong (blog). While we are still on the topic of homosexuality in Singapore, Mr Siew is the NMP (pictured below, source: his blog) who fought for the rights of gays in Singapore by spearheading the move to repeal 377A. "Its not just a gay thing, its about equality." He just shows that you do not have to be gay yourself to feel for gay people. (more)
Resolution: To be more tolerant and not to discriminate. People are unique with their own quirkiness and idiosyncrasies, so I should start to befriend those not within my 'comfort zone' of friends.
8. The Becks; David and Victoria 'Posh' Beckham. The rightful British royalty, this beautiful pair took the U.S. by storm when His Majesty Becks took up the offer to play for that soccer club in L.A. (What? Galaxy what? Who cares about the club? Like seriously). And not to be outdone, his wife's 'comeback' with the reunion of the Spice Girls still reaffirmed that she can't sing. (But we missed the Spice Girls, didn't we?) Resolution: Do something new. Learn as many languages as I can and read more about architecture and design. Learn to be more independent when I am in the States this coming May.
7. Sharing the next spot are Al Gore and Paula Dobriansky. We all know who Al Gore is (he is Superman!). He has won himself the Noble Prize and in just a matter of few years, has garnered more support across the world than Bush can in a lifetime. Uncensored in one of his speeches in the Climate Change Conference in Bali, Gore, frustrated with his own country's representatives, had this to say, "I am going to speak an inconvenient truth, my own country the United States is principally responsible for obstructing progress here in Bali."
If Gore was the hero during the United Nations Climate Change Conference, Paula Dobriansky, would be the villain equivalent. She is the secretary of state for democracy and global affairs and was leading the U.S. delegation in the talks which she single handedly stalled. And she became the number one hated person in the room full of grumpy and sleepy politicians and environmentalists. (more)
Resolution: Be more 'green' and promote the 'green' culture to my family and friends. Recycle at home and save electricity and water whenever I can. Be kinder to Mother Nature.
6. Cho Seung-Hui. He was the shooter in Virginia Tech's massacre. He was responsible not only for the deadliest school shooting in the U.S. history but also for bringing the spotlight on the state of bullying in the U.S. and its deadly repercussions. "This is it. This is where it all ends. End of the road. What a life it was. Some life." (more) Resolution: Be nicer to people around me. And help others. Reach out to friends I have not kept in touch with and catch up with them one of these days. Not forgetting to forgive friends who have hurt or disappointed me as well as to seek forgiveness from those I have done likewise.
5. Benazir Bhutto. She was twice elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan but later she went into self-imposed exile in 1998. She returned to her country in October this year only to be assassinated two months later on 27th December. She had shown fearlessness returning to serve her country despite having a huge target on her head. "They might try to assassinate me. I have prepared my family and my loved ones for any possibility." Resolution: Let nothing intimidate me anymore. Do things I would normally be scared to do. Fear shall never be an excuse anymore.
4. Hady Mirza, for doing Singapore proud. Actually more like for shocking the whole of Asia. Kudos on being the first Asian Idol (pictured below, source Straits Times). "I'd like to thank everyone and my fans for voting for me. Without them, I wouldn't be where I am now." (more)
Resolution: Reach for the stars. Work harder to achieve my dreams and goals (I wanna get my A for design this coming semester)!
3. Britney Spears, for her lacklustre MTV performance and since then, her 'comeback'. This girl is seriously spiralling to the bottom. From panty-less crotch shots, her run-ins with the paparazzi to her less than desirable body during the MTV performance to her losing custody of kids to her worthless ex-husband, this girl has done it all under the age of thirty. She makes Paris Hilton's time in jail look like a trip to the spa. Even her sister wants a bit of the infamy, getting pregnant at 16. If there is an award for the best Mum of the Year, their mum (and themselves) certainly wins it hands-down. "Oh my God, I looked like a fat pig! I looked like a fat pig!!!" (more)
Resolution: Seize the day, loosen up and let my hair down more (like there is not much to let down in the beginning). And yes, get into shape! Loose the bulge. Gym more till I get the physique I want.
2. The runner-up position is shared by the monks in Burma. Paralleling the followers of Gandhi in the mid-20th century, these saffron-coloured robed monks began leading in peaceful anti-government protests since mid-September of this year. However, with the hard-fisted crackdown by the junta from 26th September onwards, many were killed, detained and severely punished. Undeterred, these monks are still protesting against the government just as peacefully as they had, in spite of the eyes of the world being distracted elsewhere. (more) Resolution: Be less angsty and moody. Revert back to my old 'zen' self.
1. On top of the list of the People of 2007, the five dragonboaters: Stephen Loh Soon Ann, Jeremy Goh Tze Xiang, Poh Boon San, Reuben Kee and Chee Wei Cheng. The deaths of these five promising young men gripped the nation in tragedy on the 25th of November when their bodies were found a day after their dragonboat capsized in Cambodia. What made the nation so unified in mourning? Was it because they were wearing the national colours when they passed on? Was it because they were young men in their prime? Was it because they were someone's sons, brothers and friends? Whatever it is, they might have led ordinary lives but they left extraordinary legacies. Friends reminiscent the times spent and strangers wished to have known them. A teacher, reigning Mr Singapore 2007, a joker, a true friend, a filial son and a dedicated dragonboater; these were merely what they were before the tragedy, but now, they are truly a national inspiration. That is why they deserve to be on top of the list. (more) Resolution: Live life to the fullest cos' life is unpredictable.
And before I sign off my last entry for 2007, I hope I would be lucky to see you guys again in my third year blogging (lest I lose interest or wadeva).
I know who's top in my list for next year's "People of 2008".
My yet-to-be-born niece. My sister's due date was yesterday. I'm hoping for a new year baby today.
Hehe... she would already be famous.
Have a blessed New Year everyone.

Goodbye 2006!!! Goodbye 2007?!!
Bitched on: Sunday, December 31, 2006 Time: 12/31/2006 10:51:00 PM
2006 is/was (depending on when you read this) really an eventful year for me.
I ORD-ed from the Army. And then into university I went. How drastic the change was. From restricted freedom to unlimited freedom. From wearing green (and not forgeting uncomfortable boots) all day, sticking to almost-impossible-schedules, waking up in ungodly reveille hours, getting into trouble (with fat Warrant Officers) and being outfield in camo, dirty and 'unshowered' for days... to finally being normal, a civilian.
And I can't believe I'm going to say this but I really miss Army.
I really do. I miss my friends. I miss my men. I miss my recruits. I miss the camaraderie. And I miss having the 'power'. Ha ha...
And coming back to school, to university, was like a culture shock. Took us (guys) a while to re-adjust and 're-use' our rusty brains. Plus, the introduction of girls into the picture reverted us back from our barbaric ways to our pre-army ways.
How my life has changed. 2006...
A bittersweet year.
Never would I have imagined at the beginning of 2006, I would lose my only living grandparent. My Grandma was perfectly fine till the last quarter of the year. And she passed away not soon after.
:-(
Sigh...
That aside, we have an addition to the family. My sister got engaged. All the best to her and her fiance (the best brother-in-law I can ever ask for, FYI) who are getting married early this/next year (again depending on when you read this).
I re-read my blog entry last year, the one with all my new year resolutions for 2006.
I forgot I had writen one till a good friend of mine reminded me (to her; 2006 has been a really tough time for you, I wish you a problem-free 2007. Start afresh, babe. Gambatte.)
Oh well, back to my 2006 resolutions, I failed miserably.
Firstly, I have yet to get a licence (to kill... no lah... to drive... which reminds me I haven't watch James Bond yet...). I am freaking stupid. Period. My PDL expired like eons ago. Yet, 0 lessons so far.
And secondly, still no girlfriend. Grrr... Nuff said... Grrr...
Lost interest in getting a marine aquarium tank. No more Nemo for me. But I am thinking of adopting baby penguins now... especially feet-tapping ones.
Sports? What sports? Whatever happened to that idea to pick up a physical sport?
But there were other resolutions that I made it through. Like choosing a university and a course (obviously). Getting a new wardrobe. Saving money. And still continue with my gyming and running (yes, I run now!).
That said, I still have to come up with resolutions for 2007. So here goes:
- Get a cap score of at least 4.5 next semester to make up for my average first semester.
- Dance in NUS's 'Dance Blast' (finally, after shelving that idea last semester).
- Do well as a member of TAS (The Architectural Society) and probably organise the next FOC (Freshmen Orientation Camp) as the 'Head'.
- Get a girlfriend (****priority****).
- Get a job during the June holidays.
- Save money $$$$$$$$$$.
- Go to Dubai in June. Maybe Australia too. And Thailand in December.
And like tradition (What tradition? I have been blogging for only a year), here are my hopes for 2007.
I have none. 2007. Hopeless. Kidding.
But seriously, the world is coming to an end. Sooner than we expect it to be. And if we don't do something about it, we are all going to die by 2020 maybe. Just look at the weather patterns now. Everything changed. Everything, every disaster, is much more drastic. More unimaginable earthquakes. Hurricanes and tropical storms are stronger and bigger than usual. Unusual rain storms strike everywhere. The recent regional rain is so bad, there are floods in Singapore (despite the effective drainage system here), Malaysia (said to be its worst national disaster, with hundreds of thousands evacuated) and Indonesia (plus, Aceh was struck with another earthquake)!
The weather patterns are so screwed up globally that it recently snowed in some parts of Australia (when it is supposed to be summer down under). Plus there was also snow in the middle east!!! In Jerusalem!! So weird.
In addition to that, winters in Europe and North America are relatively warmer too. Even New York City was not spared; it had its first snow-less winter in 150 years. And Scandinavian countries have comparatively more snow-less mountain peaks now, thanks to the global warming.
People. Wake up! We need to do something!!!
Sigh...
I sound a bit insane, I know. I just hope that there will be a 2008 for me to write my resolutions again. Lol. Labels: holidays, natural disasters, new year resolutions, personal

New Year Resolutions
Bitched on: Friday, December 30, 2005 Time: 12/30/2005 10:32:00 PM
Notice: For once, I will go out of character and not bitch in this post (not so much)...
2006 will be a special year for me.
I will ORD (goodbye SAF, hello CV World) on March 16th and I'll start my tertiary studies in August. Furthermore, I will turn 21 on 11 September (so old...so adult...woohoo R(21).) Its a huge step (more like a jump to me...) I am so nervous facing these changes, these challenges ahead... So I have come up with a list of things I will want to do or hope to achieve this 2006.
This will be my New Year's resolutions for year 2006... - ORD without any glitches i.e. no extras before D-Day, fingers crossed.
- Use lesser vulgarities (should be more civilised now...dammit)
- Decide without regret which course I want to go in Uni (even decide which university to go to - NUS or NTU??).....I'm so fickle-minded (my friends are so not surprised)
- Have a healthy body (I've been going gym like often now) and complexion (thanks to the dermatologist and proper diet), so metrosexual rite? I scare myself....
- have long long hair (flowing~~~....rite....)
- have a job before I start Uni (any lobangs anyone?)
- revise on my 'A' levels subjects again (err.. differentiation, blood circulation, probability, periodic table, transpiration, reactive metals, er... my English?)
- buy a completely new wardrobe (Uni no more unforms leh...)
- contradictory to above, I need to save money for my uni course (only God knows which course)
- have my driving license before I start school (I just applied for my BT today, 30/12/05, still a long way, I know.)
- have a girlfriend (to stop rumours and teasing that I bat for the other side... sheesh..... I know I have been single for a long time.... a LONG time...too long...)
- lose my virginity (haha.. Kidding. Lost that along time ago.... rite......LOL)
- start being nicer to strangers starting with my one-night-stands (OK, this is pushing it too far... LOL), seriously, I should smile more often to other people. Be more pleasant and friendly. Make more friends. Why stop with people...
- I'll be kinder to animals. I am going to start rearing colourful marine fishy with colourful sea coral and colourful wiggly anemone and a small clown fish (named Nemo) and and....err..
- pick up a physical sport like soccer (rite....)
- Ok, maybe watersports. I have always wanted to scuba dive (is it a sport?) or wake boarding.
- stay clear from smoking (I admit, I have tried it once in a while...) and drinking (despite pressures from my friends to drink, I am still sticking to my guns) and sex (rite....OK fine stay away from porn....sigh...)
- and finally I hope I can be closer to God (and start praying again). Amin...
On a more serious note: I hope 2006 will be a peaceful year (not only in my life but in the world). Though in 2005, we were not as much affected by war and terrorism (except for the 2nd Bali bombings... damn those lunatics) as we were in 2004 and the years before, Mother Nature seemed to really hate us humans this year (what a bitch... really). The year 2005 started solemnly with the Boxing Day earthquake and its devastating tsunamis across the Indian Ocean, the bird flu outbreak in Eastern Asia, the Malaria outbreak in South East Asia, Hurricane Katrina in the USA, the heat wave in Europe, the massive earthquakes in the Indian Himalayas, now floods in Indo-China... I hope with all these disasters, a silver lining will emerge, all countries will now put aside their differences to work together and help one another, united (sounds corny, I know). There are more (corny but serious) things I hope 2006 can bring... I hope hunger and poverty will be a thing of a past. I hope everyone can have access to clean portable water. May the sleeping developed countries see and respond to the plight of the third world countries. I hope there will no longer be supression of people's rights and freedom. Everyone is entitled to do what they want, say what they want, watch or read what they want, report news without fear or biasness, marry whoever they want (same sex or inter-racial) or practise their faith freely without prosecution or discrimination. I hope a cure for AIDS and other (currently) incurable diseases will be found. Hopefully, no more young child will become an orphan or victim to these diseases. I hope there will no longer be the need for war. And terrorism is no longer a threat. Everyone can travel and live freely without fear or suspicion. I hope Tomkat will just break up. And Jennifer Aniston will just agree to polygamy with Bratt Pitt. I hope... I hope 2006 will be great. just great...
Happy 2006 Everyone. Labels: holidays, new year resolutions, personal
