    Deja Vu?
Bitched on: Tuesday, May 29, 2007

What's up with Miss Universe 2007?
Is it me or can you see the blatant 'politically-correctness' of the show?

Were they trying to correct last year's mistake of not giving the 2006's title to Miss Japan? Isn't it obvious they are trying to show they do not favour Latinas anymore?
"Hey, we're not racist. See, another Latina is not crowned. We chose an Asian over her instead."
Deja vu? Last two women standing: one Latina (Miss Brazil) and the other Asian (Japan again...).

Unlike last year, Miss Japan won. Miss Latina lost.
But unlike last year, this year's Miss Japan wasn't as deserving (nor was she the obvious crowd favourite).
Her answer for the Q and A? So-so.
    Her looks? So-so.
And what's up with the gesturing when she talks? Does she want to poke some one's eyeball out? One word: handcuffs.
Miss Korea (above, second from the left) was also placed in the top five (just in case one Asian face does not make it, maybe?). But Miss Korea was HOT. Super hot. But her Q and A was a tad disappointing and a lot 'duh'.
    "Missionary work is my dream?"
Yeah right, honey (no pun intended).

    Miss Korea... Honey Lee... *drools*
Miss Thailand was in the top 15. Miss India, top 10.
Miss Philippines was crowned Miss Photogenic. Miss China, Miss Congeniality.
    See the trend?
Are Asians the flavour of the year now? Making up for last year? Obvious, I say.
Even the judging panel consists of some familiar Asian faces: Michelle Kwan and James 'Ando' Kyson Lee (from Heroes). Two Asian judges compared to last year's nil. But the judges are still all Americans though.

Miss U.S of A is actually another of my favourite. She looks like Jessica Alba, no?
She fell on her butt during the evening gown segment. But she picked herself up calmly and elegantly. Ouch... Poor poor girl. I kinda feel so bad for her. And her expression as she fell was one of disappointment and shock. A fall is a fall; Michelle Kwan (an ice-skater) must have really felt for her.

To add salt to the wound, she was booed (very loudly) by the (mostly Mexican) audience during her Q and A. But she held her composure up even as the booing continued and drowned out her answer. Isn't this supposed to be a classy black tie event? I'm sorry, for a moment there, I thought this was a soccer match.

Too bad she got fifth. She was one classy lady. The smile she flashed when she was announced as the forth runner-up says it all: disappointed but determined.

    Work.

Actually, the laptop has since been fixed like a few days ago. Just too plain lazy to update the blog.

    Yes. Lazy.

And busy with work. Two more weeks before the job stint ends and I fly off to my Middle Eastern adventure.

What exactly do I do for my work?
    Think Indiana Jones-y architect.

My friends and I have to gather information from old text books and old plans of buildings of the 19th and 20th century Raffles Place in the school library.

Some of the books are so old (circa 1800s) that a sneeze or a rough flip or fold of the page can cause the paper to 'atomize' into fragments... (I think my friends and I damaged a few books like above; unintentionally of course).

And then we view plans and drawings of old buildings printed onto microfilms using some sort of projecting machines. This is an example of what we can get:

Sounds dull but it pays well (standard researching NUS undergraduate's pay, you go figure that out). Muahahaha...

But its actually fun to be holding and going through these pieces of history (brittle as they are). Plus, we learnt a lot about the area.
Like there was the Robinson fire in November 1972 which killed 9 people.

The old buildings of Raffles Place (then known as Commercial Square) were actually quite ahead of their times (post-Raffles history) with elevators and structures apt for the tropical climate.
Plus, in the course of a century, a lot has changed around the square.

    1900s:
    1930s:
1950s:The large white building in the foreground is the famed 'Little John'. If you're wondering that it looks familiar, you might have seen it before at the two main entrances of Raffles Place MRT station.

That's how Singapore retains history I guess. We demolish something historical and build a replica.

    A lousy replica.

    That's Uniquely Singapore for you.

That's the title of a new horror Malay show (translated: Don't look back).

Should have been renamed 'Don't look at all'.

Luckily for me, I was watching it on VCD (not so lucky for a few of my relatives and friends, including my Twinnie, who had watched it on the big screen and later bitched about wasting $7.50). So that's like $10 for the VCD and any number of people can watch it over and over again (the VCD is original for your information; I am so against piracy).

Lame movie. Funny at all the parts which are not supposed to be funny. Duh storyline; read: predictable. And it relies so much on the 'shock' factor; almost every scene has some unexpected and sudden noise or something moving in the background. Come on... after a while it gets tiring...

Just proves to show that Malay horror movies have a long way to go before they are on par with their Korean, Japanese or Thai counterparts.

    Shocker.

Another incredibly stupid mistake that will be forever etched in the history of American Idol.

    Why?! Melinda Doolittle? Why?!

Grrr.... Its definitely a shocker... She was awesome. She should have been the one! It just shows that the show is becoming more and more nonsensical and unpredictable (since the Carrie Underwood and especially the Taylor Hicks era...)

But not all shockers are bad. I know of one. But I have to keep it a secret for now.

A good shocker. A happy one. An incredibly happy one.

Let's just say probably four know of this secret (well, five if you include the doctor).

Hmmm... Now that would have been a tip. Stay tuned to know what it is...

Its funny how news you've heard from hearsay make their way into the newspapers a few days later.

Like the one about that durian shop and their seemingly unscrupulous tactics to sell expensive durians. I too received an e-mail forwarded from Ms Doris Tey warning her friends and friends of friends about the Chin Yong Fruits Trading in Sims Avenue. She had complained about the seller who opened three durians without checking with them the cost and instead placed them on the table urging them to try and subsequently ingest while all the time, avoiding to answer her and her friends. The bill? A whopping $140.

    Just for durians? Come on...

How about that Hwa Chong Institution guy who had punched the bus driver over some really stupid misunderstanding? I've heard the news on the night itself (I have my sources... I can't name the source cause the person would kill me... again).

In fact, there was actually more to it that they didn't report. It was reported that 'he was crying as he was on the handphone with his Dad' and 'he seemed remorseful' and 'apologetic'.

Remorseful? From what I had heard, he was more concerned about his 'reputation'. He was repeatedly exclaiming that this would be on his record and ruin his chances of getting a scholarship. Yes! He was more concerned about his scholarship!!!

Apologetic? He was cursing and swearing to his father on the phone (he even used the F word). Yes. He was telling his Dad to come down to clear the issue out but his Daddy had refused and hence the swearing...

Come on... Remorseful? Apologetic? My foot.

    News in Brief.

    • Two Singaporean Army servicemen were killed in Taiwan when a fighter jet crashed at a military base in Hukou on Friday.
3rd Sergeant Isz Sazli Sapari, a 19-year-old SAF personnel, was accorded a full military funeral at the Pusara Abadi Cemetery in Lim Chu Kang today.

Arrangements are underway to transport the remains of the other deceased, Private Fan Yao Jin back to Singapore on Sunday. He too will be accorded a full military funeral.

Two of the nine servicemen injured in the Taiwanese fighter jet crash at a military base in Hukou on Friday are back in Singapore. Both suffered second and third degree burns up to 50% of their body.

This Blogger says: Rest in peace, brothers.
Notice that in every news report, they choose to use the word 'remains' instead of the usual 'bodies'.
    • British Prime Minister Tony Blair announced that he would leave office on June 27 after a decade in power.

This Blogger says: Isn't Tony Blair the name of Bush's dog?

    • Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang shocked the ruling party with his resignation Saturday less than a week after he lost the primary for the 2008 presidential election.

This Blogger says: Is it the trend nowadays to resign suddenly?

    • YouTube.com is banned in Thailand not once but twice.

Thailand has blocked YouTube for a second time, due to a video mocking King Bhumibol Adulyadej. According to Reuters, Thailand’s Communications Minister Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom had YouTube blocked after their requests to Google to have the clip taken down were ignored.

The first time YouTube was blocked in Thailand was possibly for showing related to clips from a CNN interview that features Thailand’s ex-Prime Minister Thaksin.

The clip is not only “offensive” to Thailand’s monarchy, but has been criticized by several Buddhists as well, because of the clip’s showing a pair of women’s feet (the lowest part of the body) above the head (the highest part of the body).

Criticizing royalty in Thailand is a crime punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

This Blogger says: I'm not going to show the offensive video here. I still want to go Thailand for holidays you know.

    • Paris Hilton has been jailed for 45 days

In March 2007, the Los Angeles City's Attorney's Office claimed that Hilton violated the terms of her DUI (Driving Under Influence) probation by speeding without her headlights on, driving with a suspended license, and failing to enroll in a court-ordered alcohol education program.

On May 4, 2007 Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in a correctional facility for violating her probation, and she is required to begin her jail term by June 5, 2007 or risk a doubling of her sentence.

This Blogger says: Her sister Nicky has started a chain of boutique hotels, maybe Paris should start her own chain of boutique prisons. Hilton Prisons. That's hot.

PS: Can't wait for the new season of Simple Life. Nicole Ritchie and her have patched up and are currently shooting another season: A Simple Prison Life.

    • Singapore A-list Mediacorp actor Christopher Lee was sentenced to a month's jail

He was also disqualified from driving for three years and fined $4,500 for DUI and hit-and-run. He had hit a motorcycle which was in front of his car. The rider and his pillion rider fell. Lee drove off and stopped some distance away. Instead of helping them, he got into his car and drove off.

This Blogger says: Jail that coward's arse. And what's $4,500 to that overpaid talentless chicken?

    No pain, no gain...

Stupid blogger.com is still not fixed yet. Why?!!

So I'm just gonna blog. Dunno if this will get published... But I need to blog! I'm super bored. Blog-therapy.

Been having a bout of low self esteem all of a sudden. I just loathe looking at myself in the mirror. Don't ask me why... I just do. I feel ugly...

    What a 21st-century-guy to do?

    Go for a facial.
The first... in almost a year for me. I lost my way looking for the place in Orchard Road (I need more brain food... such a himbo).

Decided to try something else other than the usual exfoliation and facial steam.
Microdermabrasion (I think its spelt that way...).

    Painful as hell.
Its like a cross between a vacuum cleaner and a sander. Whatever is scrapped off the skin is sucked away.

    Ouch.

I have had a few surgeries in my life: my lower lip operation and my many (four to be exact) wisdom teeth extraction surgeries. Mind you, I was awake for all the surgeries (thank God for local anaesthesia). I heard every breaking teeth and the drill drilling into my mouth. I felt the knife slicing into my flesh and every prick of the needle stitching me up. But none could prepare me for microdermabrasion. I was digging my right pinkie into my chest to take away the pain from my face.

Did it work? Was my self esteem restored after that?

Maybe the complementary massage helped a bit.
But my face was devoid of any facial expressions after that for the next few hours...

It felt like I had taken botox.

    Haha... Another stupid entry. Muahaha...

PS: I found a solution to the problem (something was wrong with the 'create post' page; the icons were all over the page and some links didn't work).
Solution: Just add a 2 to the http://www.blogger.com/post-edit... to make it http://www2.blogger.com/post-edit... Refresh the page after that. Everything should be fine. Its inconvenient but it works. Been snooping around and I found out it only affects Singaporean bloggers using Singnet. I hope blogger.com will do something about this.

    Emo Spidey.

    Last paper over. Finally.

Holiday-yoh!!! And what a good way to end the school term by watching the much awaited third instalment to my all-time-favouritest movie: Spiderman. Watched it with the super lame all-guys archi course mates of mine. So many stupid conversations and lame camera-whoring moments. It was such a blast!!! Haha...

Just had to share some really lame shots with ya'all before I go into the preview proper cause it was such a hilarious day out.

Hmmm... 5 guys. 8 cups of bandung. From 2 different drink stalls. This is what happens when you don't communicate well...

Where better to waste time than at Toys-R-Us?

Getting in the mood for the movie...

    Spidey and his Black alter-ego.

A must-take shoot for all those who visit Toys-R-Us at Vivocity.

Shit, I looked at the wrong camera. Hard to coordinate leh...

Ok, so now to the movie.

To those who thought Spiderman 2 was the best movie you have ever watched... ever (like myself), Spiderman 3 is a let-down.

I won't go into details about the storyline (won't spoil it for those who have yet to catch it) but I think Spiderman 3 is too 'concentrated' with too many storylines: Dark Spidey, Sand villain guy (I have no idea what he is called), Venom, New Goblin and the Harry Osborn-Mary Jane-Peter Parker love triangle, plus another complicated love triangle (or rectangle): Mary Jane-Peter Parker-Gwen Stacy-Eddie Brock.

Its way too much for a 2 hours long movie. Please... I need a pee break.

And they try way too hard to make you tear... like seriously, towards the end, it was scene after scene of the characters crying (I just gave the ending away... its a sad ending... oops).

And because of the complicated storyline, I feel that Venom (my favouritest villain of all time) didn't get as much screen time as he deserves. What? Less than half an hour of the movie? Too little, Sam Raimi.

Its Venom! Spidey's greatest foe for God's sake! And the way he was killed off was so disappointing and rushed.

But one of the good things about the movie is that it picks up very well from where they left off in Spidey 2. A very fine gel. Even had a few reference to Spidey 1 (the Sandman dude was the actual killer of Parker's uncle... so coincidental!). The special effects and fighting scenes are still as captivating but yet very similar to the previous two movies (fine by me). The acting has certainly improved (especially James Franco who plays Harry Osborn and Rosemary Harris who plays Aunt May).

The movie had developed the three main characters (Peter, MJ and Harry) very well indeed. So much was explored. Especially MJ, more so than the first two movies; you don't feel like she's the weak damsel-in-distress again (except for the last part when she was held captive again) but you feel for her and understand more of her. Friendship, as well as love, is tested in the movie (very real, excluding the fact that they have super powers, but yeah... it happens in the real world too, "You killed my Dad, I will avenge his death; plus I will steal your girl while I'm at it....") That happens I guess...

While Spidey 1 was about Parker struggling with his new found powers and Spidey 2 was about Parker struggling to get things straight in his life, Spidey 3 had it that Parker was doing so well with things in his life that it made him complacent and even (to a certain extent) arrogant. And then he loses it all again, and then you get the emo Spidey.

    Revenge. Revenge. Revenge.

That's all the dark Spidey was all about (I couldn't help but to cheer this side of Spidey on).

And I liked Spidey's new angst-y look! Haha... The awesome black spider-suit aside, Peter Parker had his emo hairdo and eyeliner and brooding stuff. Who said emo was out?

But Tobey gained a few pounds I think. Had a bit of a double chin... So its about time Spidey retires.

All good things must come to an end, I guess. Sadly, they didn't end it at Spidey 2.

My Verdict: Just watch it. Just because.

    This is Sparta Retarded!!!!
Bitched on: Wednesday, May 02, 2007
    Time: 5/02/2007 12:40:00 PM

    Continued from previous entry.

I realised that to call these youths 'retarded' would be an insult to those mentally retarded.

    Morons? Idiots? Punks? Barbarians? Savages?

Why in the world are doing this?
Its no laughing matter I can tell you that.
Its life or death for God's sake.
They savagely attack these people (usually many against one; or the victims are outnumbered). And the victims usually end up dead or have their face smashed in and every bones in their body made into powder.

And they claim its for honour and glory? What the flying f*ck?

Where is the honour in mass-beating a lone victim?
And to film these savage and ruthless deeds to upload on video hosting websites for 'bragging rights'?

Hello? Haven't they heard of something called 'evidence'? How stupid is that?

What other reasons they give to do this?
Pride? Herded mentality? Defend territory? Impress girls? Prove self worth?

Who the hell do they think they are? Spartans?
(I admit that after watching 300, I kinda felt a little barbaric myself; that movie is such a 'guy' movie, simply awesome. And I wanted to kick me some Persian arse.)

Haven't they thought of the consequences if the guy becomes a vegetable or worst, die? They are looking at life imprisonment and caning and stuff.
What, did they think that since there are so many of them, the life imprisonment term would be evenly shared amongst all of them?

Serving the jail term aside, who are they to savagely take away someone's life? Who's going to answer to the deceased parents? His loved ones and friends?

My sister and her hubby (then boyfriend) happened to see a gang of twenty or so skinheads beating a chub like a rag doll on the Padang late one night. To cut the long story short, my sister tried to call the police, the gang caught up with them, and beat up my brother-in-law (and yeah, he has bragging rights for that... hahaha).

So if anyone happens to see a pair of broken glasses on the Padang, please lemme know, cos my bro-in-law is looking for it.
